Changes in Number and Intensity of World-wide Tropical Cyclones
نویسنده
چکیده
Bayesian statistical models were developed for the number of tropical cyclones and the rate at which these cyclones became hurricanes in the North Atlantic, North and South Indian, and East and West Pacific Oceans. We find that there is small probability that the number of cyclones has increased in the past thirty years. The rate at which these storms become hurricanes appears to be constant. The rate at which hurricanes evolve into category 4 and higher major storms does appear to have increased. We also investigate storm intensity by measuring the distribution of individual storm lifetime in days, storm track length, and Emanuel’s power dissiptation index. We find little evidence that, overall, the mean of the distribution of individual storm intensity is changing through time, but the variability of the distribution has increased. The cold tongue index and the North Atlantic oscillation index were found to be strongly associated with storm quality in the Western, and to a smaller extent, the Eastern Pacific oceans. The North Atlantic oscillation index was strongly associated with the increase in the rate of strong storms evolving.

The Importance of the Montreal Protocol in Mitigating the Potential Intensity of Tropical Cyclones
The impact of the Montreal Protocol on the potential intensity of tropical cyclones over the next 50 years is investigated with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM), a state-of-the-art, stratosphere-resolving atmospheric model, coupled to land, ocean, and sea ice components, with interactive stratospheric chemistry. An ensemble of WACCM runs from 2006 to 2065 forced with a stand...

Bayesian statistical models were developed for the number of tropical cyclones and the rate at which these cyclones became hurricanes in the North Atlantic. متن کاملChanges in tropical cyclone number, duration, and intensity in a warming environment.
We examined the number of tropical cyclones and cyclone days as well as tropical cyclone intensity over the past 35 years, in an environment of increasing sea surface temperature. A large increase was seen in the number and proportion of hurricanes reaching categories 4 and 5. The largest increase occurred in the North Pacific, Indian, and Southwest Pacific Oceans, and the smallest percentage i...
متن کاملDamaging sediment density flows triggered by tropical cyclones
10 The global network of subsea fibre-optic cables plays a critical role in the world economy and is 11 considered as strategic infrastructure for many nations. Sediment density flows have caused 12 significant disruption to this network in the recent past. These cable breaks represent the only 13 means to actively monitor such flows over large oceanic regions. Here, we use a global cable break...
متن کاملObservational Evidence for Oceanic Controls on Hurricane Intensity
The influence of oceanic changes on tropical cyclone activity is investigated using observational estimates of sea surface temperature (SST), air–sea fluxes, and ocean subsurface thermal structure during the period 1998– 2007. SST conditions are examined before, during, and after the passage of tropical cyclones, through Lagrangian composites along cyclone tracks across all ocean basins, with p...
